Privacy Policy
Last updated August 23, 2026
FilmSquare is a small daily puzzle site run by Zachary Saffran. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and how to get rid of it. We do not sell personal information, and we do not run advertising or third-party analytics.
What we collect
- Your email address, so we can sign you in and so your history follows you between devices. It is never shown publicly.
- A display name. We assign a random one such as “solver-a1b2c3” when your account is created, and you can change it on your account page. It is the only thing about you shown on leaderboards, and it is never derived from your real name or email.
- Basic profile details from Google — name and profile image — if you sign in with Google.
- Your gameplay: which puzzles you played, your times, whether you used hints, and enough puzzle state to let you resume.
- A hashed form of your IP address, kept only to rate-limit sign-in emails so the site cannot be used to send unwanted mail. We do not store raw IP addresses.
We do not collect payment details and we do not ask for your real name. We have no advertising or analytics trackers.
Cookies
We set one cookie of our own, used to keep you signed in. It is strictly necessary for the site to work and is removed when you sign out.
There are no advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking cookies, which is why you do not see a cookie banner.
Who else processes your data
We use a small number of service providers, each of which only receives what it needs:
- Vercel — hosting and request logs.
- Neon — the database storing your account and gameplay history.
- Resend — delivers sign-in code emails.
- Google — only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- TMDB — supplies movie data and poster images. Your browser loads images from TMDB, so TMDB may see your IP address as part of serving them.
How long we keep it
Account and gameplay data is kept while your account exists. Sign-in codes expire after ten minutes. Rate-limiting records are kept for a short window and then become useless for identifying anyone. If you delete your account, your data is deleted with it.
Your choices
You can play without an account at all — in that case your progress stays in your own browser and never reaches us. If you do have an account, you can change your display name at any time on your account page, and you can ask us to export or delete your data by emailing [email protected]. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, or restrict use of your information; email us and we will honour them regardless of whether the law requires it.
Children
FilmSquare is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we will update the date at the top and, where it matters, tell you in the app. Continuing to use FilmSquare after a change means you accept the updated policy.
